Role Summary:

An established engineering services business operating within the UK water and wastewater sector is looking to appoint a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to support the delivery of clean and wastewater infrastructure projects.

This role offers a senior technical position within a multi-disciplinary MEICA environment, providing leadership across mechanical design activities from early feasibility through to detailed design and construction support.

Responsibilities:

Mechanical Design & Technical Leadership

  • Lead mechanical design for UK water and wastewater assets including:

  • Pumping stations and pipelines

  • Treatment plant mechanical equipment

  • Screens, filters, chemical dosing systems

  • Sludge handling and process plant equipment

  • Produce, review, and approve design outputs such as:

  • P&IDs, GA drawings, and equipment schedules

  • Mechanical calculations and technical specifications

  • Develop concept, outline, and detailed designs with a focus on:

  • Whole-life cost

  • Reliability and maintainability

  • Environmental and energy performance

Project Delivery

  • Act as mechanical technical lead on multi-disciplinary water projects.

  • Support feasibility studies, optioneering, and value engineering.

  • Provide technical input to procurement and supplier evaluations.

  • Offer site-based technical support during installation and commissioning when required.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Mentor and support mechanical engineers and designers.

  • Lead design reviews, HAZOP workshops, and client meetings.

  • Ensure compliance with CDM regulations, health & safety requirements, and water industry legislation.

Quality & Governance

  • Ensure all deliverables meet ISO 9001 quality standards.

  • Ensure compliance with UK water industry standards including WIMES and relevant British Standards.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement and digital engineering initiatives.

The Candidate:

Essential

  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward chartership.

  • Significant mechanical design experience within the UK water or wastewater industry.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical process equipment used in UK water treatment.

  • Proven experience leading mechanical design on multi-disciplinary projects.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar tools.

  • Strong communication and technical reporting skills.

Desirable

  • Experience working on AMP capital delivery frameworks.

  • Knowledge of digital engineering and model-based design.

  • Understanding of sustainability and low-carbon design principles.

  • Experience working with suppliers and contractors.
